Dorothy also travels for clinics and to instruct riders at other locations; she was pleased to present two Centered Riding workshops at Equine Affaire 2017. Dorothy teaches a variety of disciplines to both adults and children, emphasizing safety and fun while learning about horses and their care: recreational riding, dressage, jumping, basic driving, long-lining, in-hand work, and horse management. Riding at a military style hunter barn as a child, she moved up the levels, working to become a Jr. Instructor during High School and then elected Equestrian Team Co-Captain during college. She furthered her equine education as a Veterinary Technician, and later became a 4-H Leader, Quiz Bowl Coach, and Pony Club Instructor. Since then, Dorothy has explored a variety of massage, training, and riding techniques, eventually finding classical training and Centered Riding, where she found her passion. Working through the instructor levels with Lucile Bump, Susan Harris, and Joan “Sam” Morrison as mentors, Dorothy achieved Clinician status in 2015. Pursuing more study to improve her teaching, her understanding of horses, and her own riding, she has and continues to participate in lessons or clinics with Francois Lemaire de Ruffieu, Suzanne Mente and Sally Haney as well as other CR Clinicians. Taiga Christie
Taiga has been riding at Southmowing since she was six years old. Introduced to Lucile by her grandmother, she quickly became a student and "Gremlin" (Lucile's name for barn kids). Inspired by Sally Swift and Lucile's patient, body-aware approach to training, Taiga has evented in California, studied Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and horse rescue in Iowa, and spent five years in Oregon horse rescue work. She is also a street medic educator and physical theater artist, and has been thrilled to discover parallels to Centered Riding in both theater and medic work. She studied the Alexander Technique work that is a pillar of Sally Swift's teaching with theater practitioners at the Dell'Arte School of Physical Theatre and SOMA Studio, and brings Centered Riding experience to performance art and performance work to riding. Taiga is now a Level I Centered Riding instructor, focusing primarily on teaching groundwork, equine body language and beginning riding to performance artists, care workers, and anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of nonverbal communication.
